At the core of Marley’s journey to excellence is a strong commitment to improving the quality of our country’s water infrastructure, starting with initiatives aimed at the development of engineers in the water engineering sector. This commitment is what inspired Marley’s sponsorship for the SAICE-‐WRC Water Competition Finals, which were held at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre on 16 August 2013.

At this year’s SAICE-‐WRC AQUALIBRIUM Water Competition, Marley set out to bring a whole new dynamic to the competition by sponsoring the development of new sets which were specifically designed to better facilitate participating students in building a model pipeline capable of distributing three litres of water equally between three points on a given grid.

The new sets received high praise from the students, who benefitted from the use of more effective and manageable materials that allowed for improved water flow and less spillage during the construction of their model pipeline. Apart from being used at the AQUALIBRIUM finals, these sets will also be distributed to SAICE’s various branches for schools outreach programmes.

According to Manglin Pillay, CEO of SAICE; “Marley’s support has allowed us to raise the awareness of what engineers do and the value of maths and science at core level, and has given learners exposure to different career paths in engineering. We believe that we cannot achieve a great deal of work without that kind of support”

This year’s champions came from Eqiniswene Secondary School, Ivory Park, with a total of 60 penalty points conceded. In second place was Diamantveld Hoërskool, Kimberley, with 80 penalty points, and Hoërskool DF Malan, Cape Town, shared the third prize with Mfesane Senior Secondary School, Port Elizabeth, with 90 penalty points each. The three winning teams shared the overall prize money of almost R22 000.

“It is invaluable for Marley to be involved in a competition like this because it demonstrates our commitment for the development and the future of the industry in which we operate”, said Marley PVC Product Manager, Bevan Richardson.

Marley’s support for this competition demonstrates their strong position in the South African plastic pipe industry and their commitment to making a difference through the AQUALIBRIUM Water Competition which hopes to inspire the youth to stand up to the ultimate responsibility and privilege of bettering our country.
